Alma Castle Blair's Oatmeal Cookies

2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
1 1/2 c. sugar
4 eggs
2 tsp. soda dissolved in 2 T. hot water
4 c. flour
4 c. oatmeal
1 pkg. chocolate chips or raisins
1 c. nuts
1 t. salt
1 t. vanilla
